High Five for Friday - Halloween Edition

1.  Let's start off with some very exciting news!

IT IS A............................................................................

I am getting a nephew!

2.  Started off to a very exciting week for my family.  These girls don't know it yet but they are going to have their worlds turned upside down.  But in a good way!  We found out that they are going to have a baby BROTHER!!!!!!  They have lived in a very pink and purple world.  Time to add some blue.  Mom and baby are doing just fine.  Everybody is itching to shop for boy items!  Having a baby brother is a lot of fun.  They have cool toys and you can boss them around.  What is even cooler is we finally have someone to carry on the Carr name officially in the next generation.  Bless his heart he is the only one left!

3.  Trick or treating was last night in my hometown of Norwalk, Ohio.  Here are some pictures of me and Baby K passing out treats.  She was Minnie Mouse.  She enjoyed passing out some treats, trick or treating at a few houses, and of course eating the candy!!!  My favorite costume was a Ghostbuster.  His ghost fighting pack was a big blow up backpack.  The best quote was a little girl who said, "What is that smell?"  I thought my goodness I showered today.  It was Grandpa's cigar.  LOL.  I had to think about it for a second because we are so use to it.

4.  If you know me, been to my home or office, you know I LOVE to decorate for all holidays.  I mean really decorate.  Lee thinks I am ridiculous for having so many boxes of 'seasonal' decor.  I say this is why I have a storage unit.  (Free it came with my apartment.)  I wanted to share with you some of my decor at my home and office.

Stick-ums from Target $1 bin.  I've got them for every season

I bought this tree at Pottery Barn Kids years ago on sale.  The ornaments are from QVC and they jingle.  The spider was made by me when I was very young.  My Mom kept it all these years and it looks perfect on top.

Pumpkins from Target

Candy dish from Target last year

Candy corn Hobby Lobby.  The pumpkin I made.  I saw in Martha Stewart's magazine.  She did on a real pumpkin and painted the candy corns.  As her protege I just used a fake pumpkin and stickers.

This was a kit I got from Target last year.  Has a tail on the back.

Ornament from Target
Also a kit from Target several years ago.  I did paint.  As you see I have a thing for black cats.

5.  Here are some very old Halloween pictures from when I was a little girl.  How ADORABLE is my baby brother?!

Recipe: Sour Cream Coffee Cake

If you follow me on the FacePlace, Twitter, and Instagram, you've already seen this picture.  My breakfast from over the weekend.  Because who doesn't like my posts of everything I make.

My apartment smelled so gooooood after baking this.

I love baking.  I love cooking in general.  Only thing in my life that has come naturally to me and I am good at.  I thought I would share the recipe for this delicious coffee cake.  Super easy to make.  I've made it for pitch ins, holidays, a bridal brunch, a couple of catering events at the hospital, and just because.

Sour Cream Coffee Cake
1 pkg of yellow cake mix
1 pkg of vanilla instant pudding
1/2 c oil
12 oz sour cream
4 eggs
Topping Mix
1/2 c brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 c nuts (I used pecans)

Directions:  Mix first 5 ingredients.  Mix topping ingredients in a separate bowl.  Alternate dough and topping mix in a Bundt pan.  (Or a large loaf pan would work.)  Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes.  Test with a toothpick to see when done.  Should come out clean.

All the ingredients from Aldi.  I left the sign in the back for you.  Because my family thinks I am a crazy cat lady and buys me these things.  I mean REALLY?!

BUNDT pan......name that movie............

This recipe comes from my church cookbook.  It is the church I grew up in and my parents still go there.  So I consider it mine, too.  Back in 1996, I was a sassy 16 year old.  I entered a TON of the Carr family recipes to this cookbook.  Mom was thinking ahead and bought one for each of us.  So 36 year old Megan would have one.  (How has it been 20 years!!!  My goodness I'm old.)  As you can tell it is has been WELL used over the years.  Take that Pinterest!

I'll end with a funny story.  Called how I learned to bake.  I taught myself.  My Mom will tell you she TRIED to show me, but I would just push her hands out of the way and say I know, I know, I know.  (I do not recall this memory.  Therefore she making it up.)  My poor Mother never got to bake again with me in the house.  There was only one person in the whole world that I loved to bake with and that was my Grams.  We always made oatmeal cookies together.  They were her favorite.  She always had to fight me off from eating the batter.  The raw eggs will make you sick, she would say!  (That never stopped me!)

5 Things for Friday

Hey!  Hope it has been a good week for you.  Nothing too wild and crazy in my world.  Loving this warm fall weather we have been having in the Midwest.  Have a great weekend and thanks for reading!

1.  Mom came to visit last weekend.  I didn't really get to see her much because she was here for a girls weekend with some friends from our days in Terre Haute.  But we managed to fit in some good bonding time.  ;-)

Out to dinner.  Obviously I get my good looks from her.  #twins

 2.  I have a blog coming up next week on one of the restaurants we went to.  It is one of my favorites.  Here is a sneak peak.
Moscato.  How I love thee.
Because this is too good not to share.  Breakfast at I-HOP.  Stuffed french toast.  I highly recommend.

3.  Sometimes I just miss my nieces.  So much my heart hurts.  So I demand pictures and I feel better.

From her Mommy.  That face.  I am a puddle on the floor.
Gammy had a visitor in her room while this kindergartner was on Fall Break.  I mean I think she must be leaving for college next year.  She looks at least 18.
4.  In case you didn't know, I love the Pioneer Woman on the Food Network.  I would love to be invited to her ranch for the weekend.  She is just the cutest. PW came out with a new cookware line this fall.  Found here.  My adorable Mom brought me her cute butter dish and a mason jar.  I have some other items on my list to get.
Pioneer Woman butter dish

PW mason jar.  Don't you worry about what is in the glass.

In case you didn't know, I met Pioneer Woman once at her cookbook signing.  I couldn't talk and was so nervous!

Me and the lady herself.  She was so poised.  I was a HOT mess.
For the blog on when I met the Pioneer Woman, check it out here.

5.  Going to be heading home to Ohio next week to see my nieces and celebrate Halloween.  I know I'm a dork.  I just love celebrating the holidays and birthdays with my family.  Here are some pictures from last year of the girls.

What I'm Watchin Wednesday

It is no secret that I am TV junkie.  Some would say I am a little too obsessed with my DVR and the settings.  (I just like things organized, ok?!)  When I moved this spring and had my cable switched, I got a new DVR that can record up to 6 things at once.  My life was forever changed and I ain't never going back!  (Don't worry it is very rare that I record 6 things at once.)  I thought it would be fun to review some of the new shows out this fall that I am watching.

1.  Code Black.  Wednesdays at 10pm on CBS.  By far right now this is my favorite new show.  It reminds me of ER mixed with Grey's Anatomy.  But with a little bit more of an edge.  Don't know what Code Black stands for?  Me either and I have worked in a hospital!  Each episode starts out with, "Code Black:  An influx of patients so great, there aren't enough resources to treat them.  The average ER is in code black 5 times per year.  Angels Memorial Hospital in LA is in code black 300 times per year."  The show stars Marcia Gay Harden who is one of the head doctors of the ER.  She is in charge of teaching the young new batch of interns.  They also refer to her as 'Daddy', Mama is the head nurse (Luis Guzman).  They have great chemistry together.  I sure hope this one makes it because I really enjoy it.

2.  Quantico.  Sundays at 10pm on ABC.  This one is almost a close tie for first place in my favorite new shows.  I didn't start watching it at the beginning.  Some friends on Facebook and co-workers were talking about it.  I thought I would give it a try.  Thanks to on demand, I got caught up quick.  The plot is about Alex Parrish who is training to become a FBI agent.  It flashes back and forth between her training 9 months ago, to present day when she is being framed for blowing up Grand Central Station.  I like it because it keeps you guessing.  I am not able to always able to predict what is going to happen next.  We learn about all the other FBI recruits and their background stories.  I didn't realize all that went into training for the FBI.  It seems just as intense as the armed forces.

3.  Life in Pieces.  Mondays at 8:30pm (moving to Thursdays) on CBS.  This is such a spin off of Modern Family.  It is hysterical though!  I like it because it pushes the adult humor in a way no other sitcom does.  They typically do 3-4 short stories in the 30 minutes.  The scene stealers are Colin Hanks and Zoe Lister-Jones.  They have a newborn at home and the stories are so real and hilarious.  You need to check this one out!  (No Mom not you.  Not your kind of sense of humor.)

4.  Scream Queens.  Tuesdays at 9pm on FOX.  I gave into all the hype of this one.  Everyone was talking about it and I thought I would give it a try.  I had absolutely no idea what it was even about.  It is satire at it's finest.  Like a mix of all the Scary Movies, thrown in with some sorority girls.  (If you aren't familiar with the Scary Movie franchise, they are movies based on real scary movies but they make fun of them.  They aren't scary at all and very dumb/fun humor.)  Scream Queens has an all star cast that I won't list but my favorite is Jamie Lee Curtis.  (The woman hasn't aged a bit thanks to Activa!)  I love the clothes and all the props.  I am ready to be Chanel #7.  I can't figure out who the Red Devil is.  Whodunit?

5.  Heroes Reborn.  Thursdays at 8pm on NBC.  I watched Heroes the first time around.  (2006-2010)  I will be honest.  I've slept since then.  I am having a hard time remembering what happened.  Thankfully I watch this one with my friend Lee.  He explains things for me.  (Ha-ha!)  It is only a 13 episode mini series.  It is good to see some familiar faces and catch up on their lives.  It has a completely different plot line than the original series.  The Evos (people with special powers) are no longer a secret.  A company is working to capture all of the Evos so they can create apps out of all their powers.  (So modern day!)  I would love to have an app that let's me time travel!

6.  Blood and Oil.  Sundays at 9pm on ABC.  This one reminds me of Dallas.  Which I watched the original version and the reboot they did last year.  Only difference is this is set in North Dakota.  Oil business is booming in this small town.  Shows a young couple who leaves their lives behind in hopes of finding big money overnight.  Which of course they do.  (I'm still scratching my head on that one.)  Same plots of Dallas with family fighting and everyone trying to get a piece of the pie.  This isn't really one of my favorites but I'm still watching.  It has a strong cast with Don Johnson, Chace Crawford, and Scott Michael Foster.  (Not hard on my eyes either!)  I give it 2 seasons max.

Shows I watched only once:
Dr. Ken.  I thought this one had potential but it was painful to watch.  It is starring that guy from The Hangover movies (should have been my first sign it was going to be bad.)  It is just really bad/awkward acting.  The jokes are kind of funny but the timing is all wrong and seems too forced.  I could have kept watching it but I could just foresee it wasn't going to make a full season.  Plus it airs on Friday nights, and those shows never last.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.  I would still like the hour back I spent watching this.  It was HORRIBLE.  HORRIBLE!  Do you hear me?  HORRIBLE!!!  I can't believe they aired a second episode of this one.  Story-line was terrible.  There is odd singing and dancing.  Plot is a young, successful lawyer gets partnership at a prestigious law firm in NYC.  She runs into her boyfriend from summer camp and decides to move to California to some dumpy little town to be with/stalk him.  Turns out he already has a girlfriend......  It is just really strange and DUMB!

20 RANDOM THINGS ABOUT ME

1. FAVORITE FOOD?  Oh gosh.  Really?  Any kind of dessert food.  I love sweets.  I'm not picky.  Check out my previous blog post for this delicious, easy to make cake!

2. FLIP FLOPS or HIGH HEELS?  Flip flops!!!!  Why in the world would you want to be so uncomfortable.

3.  FAVORITE PLACES TO SHOP.  Target of course.  These are my favorite Target shoppers.

They now are both a foot taller.  They need to stop growing.
4. STANDARD COFFEE ORDER?  I love, love coffee.  I typically just make in my Keurig at home.  I like it with some kind of flavored creamer....hazelnut or amaretto.  If I treat myself to coffee out, I like anything iced.  You will never see me ordering a pumpkin spice latte.  GASP!  Yes I said it.  I think they are gross.

5. ROAD TRIP MUST HAVE SNACK?  This is so weird but I never have snacks when I travel.  I'm not a snacker in my normal day to day life.  As my Dad would say, you just get crumbs everywhere!

6. DIY or HIRE IT OUT?  Hire out.  I don't know how to do anything handy.

7. TOP 5 TV SHOWS?  The Walking Dead, Anything Real Housewives, Chicago PD, The Middle (hey it is about a family from Indiana), and anything on TLC.  Check out my blog post on Chicago PD.  Sophia Bush is the reason I love to watch.  Anyone else watch her in One Tree Hill?

8. LAST BOOK YOU READ?  Girl on a Train

9. FAVORITE FORM OF EXERCISE?  Swimming

The best 5 year old swimmer I know
10. HOW TALL ARE YOU?  5'10".  Fun fact.  My brother and I are the exact same height.

11. DO YOU TRY SOMETHING NEW AT RESTAURANTS OR STICK TO YOUR FAVORITES?  I stick to my favorites.  If I try something new, I'm always disappointed.

12. ONE MAKEUP ITEM YOU CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT?  Mascara.  Eyeliner, too.

13. WHAT'S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?  My CPAP machine.

17. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOU WE MIGHT NOT KNOW.  I am actually a very quiet and shy person.  Once I am around you and feel comfortable, it is all over.  Try getting in a word around me.  I just try to take in new people and situations before they see the real ME.  I'm silently judging you.
Back in the good old days.  These are my people.
